The inaugural I’Anson Women’s Softball Rep Game, featured two of the Club’s players Charlie B and Trace, along with players from Blackheath, Liphook, Frimley Phoenix, Grayswood and Fernhurst. The match was played at Godalming Cricket Club. The mixed team faced the self titled ‘Surrey Sizzlers’, featuring players from various Surrey teams – who, all dressed in a black coordinating kit, looked a little intimidating!

Cap presentation

Proceedings kicked off with the presentation of the pinkest of pink hats, cleverly designed to clash perfectly with every conceivable colour of kit! And the inaugural I’Anson Women’s Softball Rep team was born!

I’Anson team batted first

With a 21 yard wicket and a boundary that felt like it was in the next county, Charlie B and Trace opened the batting, hitting a handful of boundaries and getting the scoring underway. As the pairs progressed through the batting, the Surrey Sizzlers proved to be quick on their feet securing a number of catches and getting a couple of wickets. The bigger boundary proved testing with 4s and 6s hard to come by, yet gaps were found in the field and the I’Anson team finished on a healthy net score of 275.

Surrey Sizzlers innings

Learning from their batting, the I’Anson team pulled their field in and managed to restrict boundaries from a strong Surrey batting team. A few wickets were picked up and with the match approaching the end, Surrey needed 7 to win off the last over. The first ball was pitched and Surrey pushed it over the boundary for a 4. By the final ball it was tied with Surrey requiring a single for the win. The ball was hit strongly to mid wicket. With the chase underway, the Surrey pair headed for the one run they needed. However excellent fielding and communication by the I’Anson team stopped them in their tracks. The ball was safely gathered and returned for a stumping to take the win!

Final net scores were Surrey 270 vs I’Anson 275. Congratulations to the I’Anson team on their win and great performance.

After a celebratory trip to the bar, the trophy was awarded and the first Women’s Softball Surrey vs I’Anson Rep game was complete. It was a big success all round with everyone already talking about next year’s match. A darn fine day of cricket was had by all!

A big thank you to the GCC supporters who came along and cheered the team on.
